Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Japan and France will maintain a “free and open maritime order” in the Asia-Pacific. This was said after the talks with French President Francois Hollande concluded on Monday.
According to Japan Today, the message is intended for China, which is claiming most of the South China Sea. This has prompted serious concern for the West and the rest of Asia due to China’s rising military presence in the region.
In an interview, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that he and Francois had agreed that ensuring an open maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region is very important. It will help to increase the prosperity and stability of the Asian region.
Beginning in May, Japan will send its biggest warship on a three-month tour in the South China Sea. China meanwhile has vowed to initiate a firm response if Japan will start any encroachment in the South China Sea.
