SINGAPORE – The Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery located at Bright Hill Road will now ban the burning of large paper boxes which serves as an offering to the dead.
The boxes are known by locals as "treasure chests" which contain items like paper watches, clothes and money which represent the material items that used to give the dead person pleasure in life.
Taoists and Buddhists usually burn incense paper items to show their ancestors filial piety during the Qing Ming Chinese festival as cited in the Straits Times.
A spokesman for the Kong Meng San mentioned that the “treasure chests” which are typically measured at 40cm in height and 55cm in length will now be banned due to the high amounts of smoke and ash produced during the burning.
The burning of smaller paper offerings in the monastery will still be allowed but the temple can still extend the ban on other items in the future.
