New tissues of the embryonic cells of mangoes brought to earth by the astronauts from the Chinese spacecraft Shenzhou XI have been grown at a laboratory in South China's Hainan province.
Through the use of “environmental mutation” in space, the mango cells were developed in an experiment that will help to cultivate a new breed of mangoes.
According to China Daily, the scientists in Hainan are now working on the next stage of the experiment in order to study the mutation and its effects on the so-called “space mangoes”.
Peng Longrong, head of the project, said that the new breed of mangoes are expected to be of higher quality than regular mangoes and more pest-resistant.
