HONG KONG – A jobless man admitted to the District Court that he set a taxi on fire after not paying the intended fare.

Chan Woon-ming was going from To Kwa Wan to Tuen Mun on August 7 last year when he told the driver that he needed to borrow money from relatives to pay the cab fare as cited in the South China Morning Post.

But the taxi driver noticed that Chan had doused the backseat with paint thinner and he was smoking a cigarette. Chan suddenly gave the driver HK$60 before leaving but it wasn’t enough to cover the full taxi fare.

When the 71-year-old driver tried to chase the passenger, he saw his taxi cab burst into flames. The damage to the taxi was estimated at around HK$120,000 and a nearby minibus was also damaged in the incident.
