SINGAPORE – Residents are now transforming small patches of land in their HDB blocks into fruit and vegetable gardens.
The National Parks Board said that the community gardens program now has 1,000 active members.
But many residents have taken a different approach to farming in the form of the new high-rise farming movement as reported in the Straits Times.
The so-called “HDB farmers” grow their crops along corridors and rooftops with some gardens extending inside their homes.
The HDB farmers also use technology to their advantage. Facebook groups have popped up recently like the SG Container Gardening and Vertical Farming along with the Urban Farmers group.
Novice gardeners turn to the groups for help on how to cultivate their plants in an HDB environment and there are also online marketplaces for buying and selling seeds and crops.
