KYOTO – A designated UNESCO World Heritage site known as the Shimogamo Shrine has been vandalized with a type of liquid last Saturday.

The police found traces of an unknown liquid sprayed all over the shrine, with at least a dozen stains left on the floor.

According to Japan Today, a shrine security guard discovered liquid spots around the shrine at around 10:30 a.m. during a regular patrol. No suspicious activity was noticed when the shrine closed on Friday night.

There were reports of various temples and shrines all over Japan being vandalized with an oily liquid between 2015 and 2016. The prominent Todaiji Buddhist temple located in the city of Nara was one of the temples vandalized last November.
