HONG KONG – Lawmakers are questioning the motives of top officials from the incoming administration who are planning to visit elderly citizens in nursing homes and families from underprivileged communities as part of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to China.
Other highlights of the HK$640 million plan includes a soccer match featuring an English Premier League team, a performance from the national gymnastics squad and a basketball exhibition between Chinese and US players.
According to the South China Morning Post, the relevance of the upcoming activities to the handover anniversary is being scrutinized by lawmakers since it also includes school climate change projects and the cleaning of old buildings.
Chief Secretary Matthew Cheung Kin-chung said that all 18 districts of Hong Kong would be covered by the activities and there are plenty of volunteers ready to help from 250 social welfare service units.
Around 300 events will be organized by private and community groups and the government will organize 320 events for this year’s celebration.
