TOKYO – A law has been passed on Friday that will allow regulators to perform unannounced inspections of nuclear plants.
The comprehensive reform of nuclear inspections in the country will give the government unlimited access to much needed data.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has recently suggested that Japan needs a more flexible system since the country still uses an outdated scheme that uses a checklist for periodic inspections.
According to Japan Today, the Nuclear Regulation Authority will implement a specific set of rules for the new inspection system that will be initiated in the year 2020.
The revised law will let utility operators take responsibility for verifying the state standard of their nuclear plants. Government inspectors will now have the power to freely confirm various data and equipment in order to monitor how the different reactors are maintained.
