TOKYO - The Environment Ministry confirmed on Tuesday that fire ants have invaded the Port of Osaka in western Japan.

A queen ant has also been discovered and it’s considered a serious threat since queen ants can produce 1,000 eggs per day.

Authorities are also looking for a possible nest that the fire ants have built as reported by Japan Today.

A container that was shipped from Hong Kong last Thursday also included another invasive ant species. The said container was sent to a warehouse in Suminoe Ward in the city of Osaka.

Another group of fire ants was killed with pesticide by workers who discovered them in the port area last Friday inside an asphalt crack.
